Rubel's journey began not on manicured pitches but on the dusty streets of Bagerhat, where tape-ball cricket was the first language every aspiring cricketer spoke. His raw pace, rare in Bangladeshi conditions, caught the eye of selectors through a national fast-bowler-hunt programme — where Rubel topped the speed gun and announced himself to the cricketing establishment. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Mirpur in January 2009, and his T20I debut followed just months later against India at Nottingham. The young pacer showed enough promise to earn a Test cap the same year, against West Indies in Kingstown.
If there was one format that truly suited Rubel's aggression and skiddy pace, it was limited-overs cricket. He became the second fast bowler from Bangladesh to take 100 ODI wickets — a milestone that spoke to both his longevity and his effectiveness across 104 matches. His most outrageous day with the ball came against New Zealand, when he claimed a stunning 6 for 26, including an ODI hat-trick — figures that equalled Mashrafe Mortaza's record for the best bowling performance by a Bangladeshi in the format. Remarkably, he had taken a List-A hat-trick just the week before.
