Australia vs England, 5th Test: England to Bat First at SCG in New Year’s Ashes Clash

The fifth and final Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series has begun at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) with a good crowd turnout for the New Year’s Test. England won the toss and opted to bat first, setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive finale in the historic Ashes series.

Both teams have decided against picking a frontline spinner, anticipating that seam movement and the cracks on the pitch will play a crucial role. Mitchell Starc, the leading wicket-taker of the series, has been handed the new ball by Australia, and the hosts have set three slips and a gully in place. A minor issue behind the bowler’s arm caused a brief delay, but it was quickly resolved, and play began smoothly.

Smith Explains Bowling Decision

Australia captain Steve Smith said he would have preferred to bat but opted to bowl first given the conditions.

“There’s a little bit of moisture in it, so hopefully the new ball does a little bit,” Smith said. “There’s some grass and it feels a bit soft. It might be slow today, but the cracks underneath will definitely come into play as the game goes on.”

Smith confirmed one change to the Australian XI, with Beau Webster replacing Jhye Richardson. He also explained leaving out spinner Todd Murphy:

“Hate doing it, but we keep producing wickets that we don’t think will spin. Seam and the cracks are going to play a big part,” he added.

Pink Test Atmosphere at SCG

The match is also the annual Pink Test, supporting the McGrath Foundation. Smith praised the fans for turning out in large numbers and encouraged everyone to continue supporting the cause throughout the match.

“It’s a wonderful week. I love seeing all the people out here in pink supporting the McGrath Foundation. They do a wonderful job,” he said.
