Mustafizur Rahman Released from IPL 2026 as BCCI Decision Sparks Fan Discontent

Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman will not play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release the player from their squad. The decision, taken by the Indian cricket board, has drawn criticism from cricket fans, particularly in Bangladesh.

Mustafizur was signed by KKR for INR 9.2 crore at the IPL mini-auction in Abu Dhabi, following a competitive bidding process involving Chennai Super Kings. The deal made him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history. Despite the high-profile acquisition, the franchise was later directed by the BCCI to release the left-arm pacer, with permission granted to sign a replacement.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the development, stating that the instruction was issued to the franchise amid ongoing developments between the two countries.

The decision has not been received positively by a large section of Bangladesh cricket fans. Many supporters have expressed dissatisfaction, stating that cricket should remain separate from political or diplomatic matters. Mustafizur Rahman has been a regular performer in the IPL since 2016, representing multiple franchises over eight seasons. He has featured in 60 IPL matches, taking 65 wickets with an economy rate of 8.13, and is widely regarded for his effectiveness in death overs.

Concerns Over Upcoming International Events

The move has also raised questions about upcoming international fixtures. India is set to host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with Bangladesh scheduled to play several matches in the country. While no official announcement has been made, concerns have emerged regarding team participation and security arrangements amid the current situation.

There is also uncertainty surrounding India’s planned white-ball tour of Bangladesh later this year. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently announced a six-match series, though the present developments may affect future discussions.

BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Nazmul Abedin said the board is aware of the reports but has not received any formal communication regarding the matter.



Mustafizur’s exclusion from IPL 2026 has highlighted concerns over the influence of non-cricketing factors on professional tournaments. Fans and observers have reiterated that cricket is a global sport and decisions affecting player participation should be based on sporting considerations.
